Notes | As BRIGHT STAR deals in flashbacks, supplementary to the Broadway production, the Production Team is open to potentially casting two actors, as applicable, to share the single role for both Leads, Alice Murphy and Jimmy Ray Dobbs-presenting the younger and older versions of the character. Any actor playing the younger iteration of the character should be at least 18 years old. All roles otherwise will be singularly cast. Additionally, the Production Team encourages persons of ALL diverse walks of life and backgrounds to audition in order to represent the full facet of our community and collective humanity. Production Cameo Roles, which will be cast from the Ensemble Community, include: Edna, Florence, Max, Dr. Norquist, Government Clerk, Well-Dressed Woman, Stationmaster, Couples Day Singer, and Mayoral Assistants as well as featured dancers in several songs, throughout. BRIGHT STAR features a large Ensemble Community that is ever-present throughout the show, existing in almost every scene, allowing the entire cast to contribute in devising the shape of the show's narrative. Instructions | Please bring sheet music and prepare a 16-32 bar cut of a Broadway or contemporary song in a similar style/storytelling style of the show-does not have to be folk genre. You MAY sing from the show! An accompanist will be available to you. Show Info | Bright Star is hopeful, communal and lasting. The show's journey is one of how our individual stories weave together as part of a collective humanity. RFCT is incredibly proud to produce the Long Island premiere of this excellent piece of spirited theatre written by actor/performer Steve Martin and musician Edie Brickell. When Alice meets a young solider just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their connection, she sets out on a journey to understand her past--and what she finds will transform their lives. |

Alice at age 36-37 is an editor of a southern literary magazine; intelligent, professional, direct, but with an air of melancholy. Young Alice at age 16-17 is rebellious, high-spirited, flirtatious, innocent, and adventurous; looking to break out of small-town life and experience the world. | Jimmy Ray Dobbs | M | 18-40 | Plays both age 18-20 and 38-40. Jimmy Ray in his early 20s in flashbacks is Mayor Dobbs' son and young Alice's beau, boyishly charming, intelligent but naive, from a family of wealth and power and is being groomed by his father for a similar future in the family business. Both iterations of Jimmy Ray are independent thinkers who are not afraid to stand up to his father for what he believes in. They have a sense of personal responsibility and morality. Older Jimmy Ray is just as lovable and charming as his younger self but more pensive with a deeper reserve of empathy. | Billy Cane | M | 20-29 | A young soldier returning home from WWII. He is an aspiring young writer, fresh, open, optimistic, passionate, charming, and a little naive. He continually experiences the world for the first time in each scene. Impacted. | Mayor Josiah Dobbs | M | 40-49 | The Mayor of Zebulon. He is a political and financial powerbroker, distinguished, imposing, and a controlling presence. He has a genuine interest in protecting his son's future and his family name, but in doing so, is ultimately pushed to a point of extreme and irrevocable cruelty. He discovers his humanity but only after it's too late. | Margo Crawford | F | 20-29 | A small-town bookstore owner and supportive childhood friend of Billy's who now harbors romantic feelings towards him. She has a lovely quirky spirited charm with a keen intellect and sincerity. | Daryl Ames | M | 25-45 | An assistant at the literary magazine. He is Funny, with a dry and officious sense of humorl Insecure, and perhaps a bit socially awkward, but endearing and innately likeable. | Lucy Grant | F | 25-45 | A junior editor at the literary magazine. She is an ambitious, professional young, modern career woman of the 1940's. Strong, forthright and provocative with a sharp sense of humor. She is flirtatious and fun. | Stanford | M | 35+ | The loyal assistant and advisor to Mayor Josiah Dobbs. a "Yes Man." He is the "handler" and has an opinion, whether anybody asked or not; bigger picture thinker. | Daddy Cane | M | 40+ | Billy's father; a widower. He is spry with a kind heart and deep love and admiration for his family and home. He may seem backwards but he is simply sincerely simple. | Mama Murphy | F | 45-49 | Alice's mother and caretaker to her family and rural community. She is warm, compassionate and sensible.
