Show Info | The action takes place in a fancy hotel suite. On a very important night for the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, Tito Mirelli, the world-famous Italian tenor, is set to perform the starring role in “Otello.” Henry Saunders, general manager of the company, is beyond stressed about everything turning out right, and insists that his assistant, Max — a nervous, young fellow and secret tenor extraordinaire — watch over Tito’s every move to ensure smooth sailing. After a huge fight with his fiery, Italian wife Maria, Tito receives a double dose of tranquilizers through a series of mishaps. Throw in Diana, an ambitious, female co-star; Maggie, Max’s giddy girlfriend; Julia, a flirty head of the opera guild; and a meddling bellhop fighting for Tito’s attention and you have a recipe for comedic disaster. Max navigates the company through one catastrophe after the next -- an angry wife, a presumed death, crazy costumes, secret sex romps, and loads and loads of slamming doors and mistaken identities. Ultimately, Max takes on the role of Otello to great effect. Together, Max and Saunders find a way to save the Opera Company’s big night in grand, farcical fashion. As a postscript, there is a roughly 90 second speed-through of the entire play. |

Roles
Role | M/F | Age | Description | Tito Morelli (Lead) | M | 40-50 | A larger-than-life, boisterous character who is every bit as flamboyant onstage as off. (Italian accent required, operatic singing voice not essential but a bonus). | Henry Saunders (Lead) | M | 40-50 | The neurotic head of the opera company who is forever fearing things will not go well. And when they don’t he becomes even more unhinged. | Max (Major) | M | 20-30 | Saunders’ assistant, who is young idealistic and under a lot of pressure to see to it that nothing goes wrong with Tito. He’s also a budding opera singer. (Again, operatic voice a bonus but not essential) | The Bellhop (Major) | M | 20-30 | None-too-bright hotel worker who is also star struck by Tito. | Maria Morelli (Major) | F | 30-50 | Tito’s long-suffering, hot-tempered wife who has had enough with all of his flirtations. (Italian accent required) | Maggie Saunders (Major) | F | 20-30 | Henry’s daughter whom Max is smitten with. She, however, is more interested in Tito. | Diana (Supporting) | F | 30-40 | Tito’s co-star. She’s sexy, ambitious and out to seduce Tito. | Julia (Supporting) | F | 50+ | Chairwoman of the Cleveland Opera Guild, who considers herself a “grande dame.” She wears a silver dress which, Saunders says, makes her look “like the Chrysler Building.” |
