Roles

RoleM/FAgeDescription
CallieF20-30Outgoing and friendly, sometimes a little superficial. She knows she’s living the kind of life that people dream of when they move to New York, but on a deep level, she feels restless, insecure and dissatisfied. Sometimes, she wishes that she were maybe a bit braver. Finds herself unexpectedly falling in love with Sara.
SaraF20-30A little shy, but self-assured and off-beat, in an alternative or “punk” fashion. She moved to New York from St. Louis, to pursue a teaching fellowship at a struggling school in the Bronx. She cares far more about having a worthwhile existence than she does about what people think of her. Finds herself unexpectedly falling in love with Callie.
Actor must be comfortable with brief, non-sexual topless nudity.
GeorgeM20-30Callie’s sometimes-boyfriend. He’s a bartender and a bit of a playboy. Though he’s a little vain, he sincerely cares deeply for Callie, and is a good friend.
PeterM20-30Sara’s ex-boyfriend from St. Louis. He is conservative, religious and often serious, but also has a goofy side. He believes that Sara’s ambitions in New York will prove to be a “phase,” and that she’ll eventually come to her senses and return to St. Louis… and to him.
Mrs. Winsley/NurseF30-50One actor to play both roles, which link together as a “Guardian Angel” character in an over-arching dream sequence storyline that takes place outside of the main action of the play. MRS. WINSLEY is a long-time New Yorker, who lives in the Village with her husband. She witnessed the attack on Sara and Callie, and hurled flowerpots at the assailant from her window. NURSE has had many years of experience caring for people who are unable to care for themselves, and she’s very good at her job. Gentle and maternal: a natural caretaker.
Detective ColeM20+Could be young and cavalier or older and hardened; either way, his approach is often abrupt and occasionally callous. He believes that his job is to be objective and to get the facts at any cost. There’s no room for coddling when he’s trying to close a case—especially when he knows he’s being lied to.
