Roles

RoleM/FAgeDescription
RUBYF18-29Ruby is a talented young dancer, newly arrived in New York City from Centerville, Utah, who is determined to break into show business. She is young, innocent, timid, and bewildered, a classic musical comedy ingenue, with a wholesome aura, and a demeanor both silly and earnest. The role of Ruby, the sweet and timid ingenue with the tremendous toes, is based on many played by actress and dancer Ruby Keeler in movies such as 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933, or Dames. The role of Ruby calls for a likable and charismatic actress with a sweet young mezzo voice and truly standout tap dance skills.
DICK M20-29Dick is a proud sailor in the U.S. Navy, but his heart lies on Broadway, and he plans to take the town by storm with his songwriting skills once his stint in the navy is over. The role of Dick, the bright and peppy musical comedy male ingenue, is based on many played by the actor Dick Powell in movies such as 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933, and Dames. The role calls for an energetic, likable actor with a strong, light tenor, and excellent tap skills.
MONA KENTF30-40Mona Kent is a hard-boiled Broadway diva, a leading lady who dons a grandiose and dramatic demeanor; selfish and arrogant, manipulative and seductive, in equal measure. Mona puts on a front as a classy leading lady, and speaks with a Standard American accent in cultured tones, but she is a clever, scheming, self-made woman, and her identity has been as changeable as her name -- she has spent some time as a Spanish-speaking waitress named Consuelo, in Pensacola, and was born Grace Topolovsky in New Jersey (the Jersey accent might come out in moments of stress). The role of seductive villain Mona Kent calls for a charismatic character actress with a torchy mezzo or alto voice, and solid tap skills.
LUCKYM20-30Lucky is a sailor on a battleship in the U.S. Navy, who has come ashore in New York City to look after his pal Dick, and to catch a cuddle with his girlfriend Joan, a Broadway chorus girl. Lucky is eager and energetic, goofy, a little rough around the edges. The role of Lucky calls for an energetic actor with excellent comic timing and strong tap dance skills.
JOANF20-30Joan is a Broadway chorus girl, cheerful, funny, and clever, with the wry wise-cracking wit and slightly tough exterior of a seasoned professional. Joan is the smartest person onstage, with a propensity for good-hearted scheming. She is full of grit and energy, and excels at motivating speeches. The role of Joan is based on any number of wise-cracking chorus girls from the musical comedy movies of the 1930s, possibly best exemplified by Joan Blondell in Gold Diggers of 1933, or Ginger Rogers in that film and 42nd Street. The role of Joan requires an actress with energy, charm, and good comic timing, along with a strong alto and excellent tap skills.
CAPTAINM40-50Captain Courageous, of the New York Courageouses -- commands a battleship in the U.S. Navy. He is a dignified, somewhat humorless man, who takes his responsibilities very seriously. Thoroughly upper crust, he is a wealthy man who comes from a family of department store tycoons. The Captain does, however, have a secretly romantic soul. The role of the Captain is often doubled with that of Hennesey, the irritable producer, and the combination requires a strong character actor with a solid baritone voice and basic tap skills.
HENNESSEYM40-50Hennesey is a hot-tempered, harried Broadway producer, who can?t catch a break. Broken and pessimistic after twelve consecutive flops, he is dealing with a temperamental star, vanishing chorus girls, and a theatre being demolished out from under him as he tries to produce ?Dames at Sea,? a song-and-dance extravaganza. Hennesey is a fast-talking, temperamental, weathered man of the theatre, who cares deeply about his profession. He would do anything for his shows, but the business practicalities are not his strong point. His anger and annoyance should be funny, but he is an unfortunate figure bordering on tragic, as he has lost his money and finally his marriage to the demands of the theatrical lifestyle. The role of Hennesey is often doubled with that of the Captain, and the combination re
ENSEMBLE18-39The Ensemble of Dames at Sea consists of theatre folk, chorus girls and boys, stagehands, and technicians who populate the 42nd Street Theatre where ?Dames at Sea? (the show-within-the-show) is rehearsing, and the strong young sailors, equally talented dancers, who man the battleship where ?Dames at Sea? is eventually performed. They should be energetic, steeped in the musical comedy atmosphere of the 1930s, and excellent dancers, with good tap skills.
