Susan Kalman- Theatre Arts Director

History: I have been at the JCC for 14 years. At that time our theatre department consisted of one children’s theatre production, one teen production and one summer production. Theatre at the JCC has grown tremendously and we now produce 6 children’s theatre productions for children in grades K-6th, one summer production for children and teens, one Community Theatre production for adults (and teens and children as needed) and we offer a  Broadway Camp (in collaboration with A Class ActNY) every year.

Productions: As we are a community center, we are committed to including all who audition. All of our productions are big musicals ranging from the most popular (ie.Fiddler on the Roof &The Sound of Music) to the more obscure (ie. Company & Curtains).  During my tenure we have produced approximately 90 productions.

Performance Space: Our theatre (Rubenstein Theatre) has almost 300 stadium seats and has the capacity to add 100 additional chairs (as needed). We continuously upgrade our sound and lighting with state-of-the-art equipment.

Favorite Productions: I can’t pick a favorite production. I am sincerely proud of all the shows we have done. But there is something especially magical when we do an inter-generational Community Theatre production (The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof and The Sound of Music). And watching our children (as young as 5 years old) and teens join together for our summer stock experience (sharing their passion for theatre) is truly inspiring.

Bizarre Incident: In all the years of having to close the JCC due to inclement weather we have only had to cancel one production (thankfully). I hope I didn’t just jinx that record!

Plans for future: This summer we are launching a complete on-line ticketing service. And I am so excited to announce auditions for Mamma Mia will be in September (performances in February).

Anything else you want to share: We are a non-denominational center. We are committed to giving every participant an enriching and memorable theatre experience. Our theatre family consists of the most talented, professional and dedicated individuals and I am privileged to have them on my team.

We always welcome new members to our theatre family and are always looking for theatre lovers who are interested in getting involved on stage as well as behind the scenes.
