Roles

RoleM/FAgeDescription
Princess Winnifred the Woebegone (aka Fred)F0+Good comic timing; physical comedy; and exemplifies the word "energetic." Winnifred is friendly, down-to-earth, and extremely likeable. Courageous and outrageous, she and Dauntless fall for each other almost immediately.
Vocal Range G3-E5, Mezzo-Soprano/Belt.
Prince Dauntless the DrabM0+Extensive singing. Good comic timing. The son of Aggravain and Sextimus, Dauntless is a mama's boy who meekly gives in to his dominating mother. He's likeable, good-natured and almost childlike. He falls hard for Princess Winnifred, and matures a bit more in every scene after he meets her.
Vocal Range A2-G4, Baritone/Tenor
Lady LarkenF0+Extensive singing. Damsel-in-distress. She's gentle, trusting, and loyal to the love-of-her-life, Sir Harry.
Vocal Range A3-G5, Soprano
Sir HarryM0+Extensive singing. He is cocky, career-oriented, and somewhat pompous, but overall, Harry is a good man. The audience will chuckle at his stuffiness but like him anyway. Sir Harry loves Lady Larken, who is secretly pregnant with his child.
Vocal Range C3-E4, Baritone
Queen AggravainF0+Has a presence that commands attention; practically vibrates with negative energy. Aggravain is Dauntless? mother. Conniving, imperious, bossy, and over-bearing, the narcissistic Queen will stop at nothing to get her way.
Vocal Range Ab3-B4, Mezzo Soprano/Alto
King Sextimus the SilentM0+Must excel at pantomime, especially over-the-top facial expressions and gestures. He participates in duets and trios through pantomime, which must be performed precisely on musical cues.
(non-singing role)
MinstrelM/F0+Extensive singing. Comfortable with physical comedy. Must be able to smoothly segue back and forth from the narrator to a character in the story. A quick thinker who fits easily into new situations. A doer, not just a reporter, has a sense of humor and admires Lady Larken.
Vocal Range C3-G#4, Tenor/Soprano
JesterM/F0+Extensive singing/dancing. Ability to do soft shoe is a plus. The court comedian, Jester is bold, intelligent, energetic, a quick-thinker and a conniver. Loyal to the mute King and has mastered how to communicate with and interpret the King to others.
Vocal Range C3-F4, Tenor/Baritone/Alto
WizardM/F0+The Wizard is the Queen's "advisor". Often imperious, our Wizard is actually a frustrated magician/showman currently doing a "Wizard gig."

Nightingale of SamarkandM/F0+Singer of the court. Doubles in ensemble.
